Information
Dog agility sports and competitions are designed to show the teamwork and communication between a dog and his handler. Dog agility brings out dogs natural instinctual habits in a timed obstacle course scored on faults and the time it takes to complete the course. Handlers can only use their voice and hand motions to guide their dog through a challenging obstacle course that includes but not limited to: jumps, tunnels, weave poles, and pause tables. There are no two obstacles alike; therefore, it is essential that the handler has full control of their dog during competition.
In dog agility competitions there are different classes for different size dogs. Dogs are separated by height; the height determines the minimum jump height. A dog entering a dog agility competition will fall into one of the 4 classes.
- The teacup size is for dogs that are less than 17inches in height. The teacup obstacle courses are specifically designed for dogs like Chihuahuas and Yorkshire. The courses feature smaller obstacles and lower jumps, and course is scaled down.
- Small dogs have a small advantage over the tea cup class in dog agility competitions because of the slight height advantage. This class does well in the weave pole obstacle phase.
- Medium dogs happen to have the perfect body type to excel in dog agility competitions. This is due to the overall balance of body height to leg ratio.
- he large dogs move slower than medium size dogs. They also have a disadvantage competing during the tunnel phase of the obstacles. But they excel at the jump events because of their longer legs.
